Sleep is a necessity that can't be ignored. But how do you get your baby, toddler or child to sleep well every night? There's a lot of information out there about this topic, but it can be confusing as to what's right for your child. In this article we'll cover everything from the best ways to help babies fall asleep and stay asleep through the night (and nap times too), all the way through toddlerhood into elementary school age!

Tips for babies up to 6 months old

Babies usually begin to sleep through the night at around 6 months. But until then, there are a few things you can do to help them get into healthy sleeping habits.

  • Establish a bedtime routine:

  • Have your baby play for about an hour before bedtime so he’s tired and ready for it when you start your routine (but not too tired).

  • Make sure the room is dark and quiet; dim the lights and turn off TVs or music players. If he cries while you’re putting him down, pat his back gently until he calms down (not soothingly). Then leave the room right away so he doesn't associate falling asleep with being in your arms or having a light on near him. It might be hard to hear over his cries at first, but stick with it—it will pay off eventually!
